  4. Here is the latest information on ViaVoice 98.
  5. Please familiarise yourself with this Read Me.  It complements
  6. the Problem Solving Reference in ViaVoice Help.  Before
  7. calling Technical Support, check this Read Me any time you have
  8. a question not covered in the Problem Solving Reference, other online
  9. Help, or the User Guide.

  42. A. Windows NT limitations.
  43.  
  44. o You must have administrator privileges to install and uninstall
  45.   on Windows NT.
  46.  
  47. o If running IBM AntiVirus for Windows NT, make sure you use
  48.   version 3.0 or later.  Earlier versions conflict with ViaVoice
  49.   installation.
  50.   
  51. o If IBM AntiVirus for Windows NT is installed with the default 
  52.   setting, dates are transcribed using only the long formats, that is,
  53.   writing out the day, month and year values. To work around 
  54.   this problem:
  55.   
  56.   - Open IBM AntiVirus menu Setup/System Shield.
  57.   - In the window that appears, select the option "Check files
  58.     when accessed".
  59.

  61. B. Installing/uninstalling ViaVoice 98 over other dictation
  62.    software.
  63.  
  64. o For best recognition, do not use the "(migrated)" enrolment.
  65.  
  66.   When you install ViaVoice 98 over a previous ViaVoice or
  67.   VoiceType product, the installation program migrates the users
  68.   of the previous product to ViaVoice 98.  User data such as
  69.   added words, macros, as well as enrolments are migrated to
  70.   ViaVoice 98.  The descriptions of enrolments migrated from the
  71.   previous product contain the word "(migrated)".  In addition to
  72.   the migrated enrolments, ViaVoice 98 creates a new enrolment
  73.   for each user whose description does not contain the word
  74.   "(migrated)".  For best recognition results, you must select
  75.   this new enrolment from the "The user is enrolled to use:"
  76.   drop-down box in the User page of ViaVoice Options, and then run
  77.   the Enrolment program.
  78.  
  79. o Installing over VoiceType 3.0.x, Simply Speaking, or
  80.   Simply Speaking Gold.
  81.  
  82.   ViaVoice 98 is a continuous speech product.  When you install it on a
  83.   computer where a discrete speech product such as VoiceType 3.0.x or
  84.   Simply Speaking is already installed, be sure that you install in the
  85.   same directory as the previous product.  Your added words and other
  86.   personal data will migrate to ViaVoice 98, and ViaVoice 98 will save
  87.   your personal speech files from the previous product in the directory
  88.   "~users30."  Your VoiceType 3.0.x and Simply Speaking enrolments
  89.   cannot be used by ViaVoice 98.  You must re-enrol in ViaVoice 98 to
  90.   increase recognition accuracy and performance.
  91.  
  92.   If you uninstall ViaVoice 98 and reinstall VoiceType 3.0.x or
  93.   Simply Speaking, you must reinstall in the same directory.  You
  94.   must also copy the subdirectories in the "~users30" directory
  95.   to the Users directory in order to restore the user data of the
  96.   previous product.
  97.  
  98. o Installing then uninstalling ViaVoice 98 over Olympus or
  99.   other ViaVoice-based dictation software.
  100.  
  101.   When you install ViaVoice 98 over Olympus or other dictation
  102.   software based on ViaVoice, and then uninstall ViaVoice 98, and
  103.   you want to continue using your other dictation software (such
  104.   as Olympus transcription), you must uninstall the other
  105.   dictation software, then reinstall it in the same directory.
  106.   Your personal dictation data (added words, enrolments, etc.)
  107.   will be saved.
  108.  
  109. o Ignore page fault when installing Olympus transcription over
  110.   ViaVoice 98.
  111.  
  112.   Sometimes when you install Olympus transcription over ViaVoice
  113.   98, the Olympus transcription installation menu might cause a
  114.   page fault.  Simply close the page fault dialog box, and
  115.   proceed with Olympus transcription installation.  The Olympus
  116.   installation will complete successfully.
  117.  
  118. o Restrictions when you upgrade multiple-language installations.
  119.  
  120.   If your previous IBM speech product is installed in more than 
  121.   one language and you install only one of those languages in 
  122.   ViaVoice 98, the previous products in the other languages will 
  123.   no longer work.
  124.  
  125.   Those other languages will still appear in the User page of 
  126.   ViaVoice Options. 
  127.   Warning!  Do not select enrolments or any other data associated 
  128.   with those other languages.  ViaVoice 98 will not work with those 
  129.   other languages.  Should you inadvertantly do so, you will be 
  130.   unable to switch back to the upgraded language, and you will have 
  131.   to re-install ViaVoice 98.
  132.  
  133. o Use back-up and Migrate Users when you need to migrate 
  134.   vocabulary-specific dictation macros.
  135.  
  136.   Dictation macros from earlier products that do not show ALL in the 
  137.   Vocabulary column of the Dictation Macro Editor (i.e., that are 
  138.   defined for the starter set only) will not be migrated at 
  139.   installation time.  If you require such macros to be migrated, you 
  140.   need to make a back-up of the corresponding user before you install 
  141.   ViaVoice 98.  After installation, use the "Migrate Users" function 
  142.   to migrate the user data.
  143.  
  144. o De-installing one language in a multiple language installation.
  145.  
  146.   If you have installed multiple languages on your computer and you want 
  147.   to remove one of those languages, you have to select a user for a language 
  148.   that remains on the system. Go to ViaVoice Options ('User' tab) and select 
  149.   a user or an enrolment which is defined for a language that remains on the 
  150.   system.

  153. C. SmartCenter in StartUp folder causes User Wizard display problem.
  154.  
  155. If you place certain programs, such as SmartCenter, in your
  156. StartUp folder, when the ViaVoice User Wizard starts right after
  157. installation, it might not display correctly on your screen.  To
  158. correct this problem, close the User Wizard, and then restart
  159. VoiceCentre by clicking Start/Programs/IBM ViaVoice - 
  160. UK English/VoiceCentre.

  163. D. Word 97 dictation limitations and usage notes.
  164.  
  165. o Word 97 starts with a Visual Basic Error.
  166.  
  167.   Close Microsoft Word 97.  Use "Install or Uninstall MS Word
  168.   Support" in the ViaVoice folder under Tools\Installation Tools.
  169.   Select Install to reinstall MS Word 97 Dictation support. 
  170.  
  171. o Limit the size of your dictated documents.
  172.  
  173.   Dictating very large Word 97 documents may drain system
  174.   resources and result in slow performance or even page faults.
  175.   Limit your dictation documents to less than 10,000 words --
  176.   about 25 average typewritten pages.  Break up large documents
  177.   into sections and edit each section separately.
  178.  
  179. o Insert a space by saying "spacebar" after numbers in Table
  180.   cells.
  181.  
  182.   If the last item you dictate within a table cell is a number,
  183.   insert a space after it by saying "spacebar" before moving to
  184.   the next cell. Otherwise, the number is moved to the next cell.
  185.  
  186. o Install Word 97 dictation support once, to enable Natural
  187.   Commands.
  188.  
  189.   Natural Commands in Word 97 do not require that dictation
  190.   support also be installed.  However, in order to activate
  191.   Natural Command support, you need to install dictation support
  192.   at least once.  You may then uninstall dictation support, and
  193.   Natural Command will continue to work.  To install or uninstall
  194.   Word 97 dictation support use Start/Programs/IBM ViaVoice -
  195.   UK English/Tools/Installation Tools/Install or Uninstall MS Word
  196.   Support.

  198. o The "Italicise this" command does not work in Word 97.
  199.  
  200.   Use "Italicise on/off" to italicise your dictated text.

  203. E. Direct Dictation limitations and usage notes (Executive
  204.    Edition).
  205.  
  206. o Certain word-processor options may conflict with inline
  207.   dictation commands.
  208.  
  209.   Certain word-processor options may conflict with
  210.   Direct Dictation inline dictation commands.  You must turn
  211.   these options off to avoid conflict.  For example, in
  212.   WordPerfect, the "lowercase-this" command will not lowercase
  213.   the first word in a sentence when the WordPerfect QuickCorrect
  214.   "Capitalise first letter" is set.  To avoid this, clear the
  215.   "Capitalise first letter" option in the WordPerfect
  216.   Tools/QuickCorrect/Options...  menu.

  219. F. Running ViaVoice 98 with other speech applications.
  220.  
  221. If your system has Lotus SmartSuite 97 with ViaVoice Seamlessly
  222. Integrated, or other speech applications, you may have microphone
  223. state problems when running the ViaVoice 98 at the same time as
  224. the other speech applications. To avoid these problems, do not
  225. run the ViaVoice 98 VoiceCentre at the same time as other speech
  226. applications.

  229. G. VoiceCentre and voice navigation limitations and usage notes.
  230.  
  231. o Use the latest version of Internet Explorer 4 (Executive Edition,
  232.   Office Edition).
  233.  
  234.   You must use the latest version of IE4: Internet Explorer 4.01
  235.   with Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 95 & NT 4.0. Earlier
  236.   versions have problems and do not work well with VoiceCentre
  237.   when the Active Program command set is enabled in the ViaVoice
  238.   Options/Command Sets page.  To see if you have the right
  239.   version of IE 4, open the Help/About Internet Explorer window
  240.   and make sure that the version is 4.72.3110.8 or later.  You
  241.   can download the latest version of Internet Explorer from the
  242.   Microsoft web site:  www.microsoft.com.

  244. o Entries in font fields are being recognised during dictation
  245.   (Executive Edition, Office Edition).
  246.  
  247.   If you dictate into a word processor that has a toolbar with a
  248.   font field, such as Word 97, numbers you dictate may be
  249.   recognised occasionally as commands, resulting in an unwanted
  250.   change in the font.  This happens when you pause before and after
  251.   you dictate the number.  If you are having this problem, make
  252.   the attention word ("Computer") required.  This requires that
  253.   all commands (other than Dictation Inline Commands) be
  254.   preceded by the attention word whenever you say these commands
  255.   while you dictate.  The attention word can be set in
  256.   ViaVoice Options, Command Sets page.
  257.  
  258. o Turn off the microphone before starting applications that use
  259.   the sound card.
  260.  
  261.   If you run applications that use the sound card, such as
  262.   Greetings Workshop or other multimedia applications and games,
  263.   we recommend that you turn the VoiceCentre microphone off while
  264.   you are actively using these applications.  Some of these
  265.   applications can detect that the VoiceCentre is using the
  266.   microphone and issue an appropriate message, but other
  267.   applications issue no warning and may crash with a page fault,
  268.   usually in the sound-card driver.
  269.  
  270. o Say "Refresh Commands" if menus are not recognised (Executive Edition,
  271.   Office Edition).
  272.  
  273.   If you find that items in an application's menu are not being
  274.   recognised, say "Refresh Commands" or "System/Close Menus" to
  275.   re-enable voice recognition of the menus in the application.
  276.  
  277. o Do not insert or edit objects within navigation macros (Executive Edition,
  278.   Office Edition).
  279.  
  280.   Navigation macros that insert or edit OLE objects directly into
  281.   a document are not executed correctly.  Use voice commands, the
  282.   keyboard and the mouse to complete such tasks.
  283.  
  284. o Use keystrokes rather than mouse clicks in MS Office 97
  285.   navigation macros (Executive Edition,
  286.   Office Edition).
  287.  
  288.   Use keyboard shortcuts for the activation of menu items when
  289.   creating navigation macros for MS Office 97 applications.  The
  290.   recording of mouse clicks in these applications are not
  291.   executed correctly.
  292.  
  293. o The minimise and maximise navigation commands do not work with
  294.   the following applications when the SpeechBar is hidden:
  295.   
  296.   WordPro
  297.   WordPerfect
  298.  
  299. -----------------------------------------------------------------
  300. H. The disk space requirement per minute of dictation is 0.75 MB.
  301.  
  302.   ViaVoice 98 needs 0.75 MB of disk space for every minute of
  303.   your dictation in SpeakPad, Word 97 or Direct Dictation.  The
  304.   online documentation incorrectly states larger numbers.
  305.  
  306. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  307. I. Sound card problems.
  308.  
  309.   The Mute check box for wave files in Volume Controls gets checked
  310.   for ES1887E plug and play AudioDrive each time Audio Setup is run,
  311.   so some playbacks cannot be heard. If this happens, go to the
  312.   Volume Controls and uncheck the mute check box for wave files.
  313.  
  314.   To fix this problem permanently on Windows 98, replace the 
  315.   Windows 98 sound card driver with a Windows 95 driver.

  318. J. Using the Euro symbol
  319.  
  320.  o ViaVoice supports dictation of European currency (Euro) amounts.
  321.    Use the Formatting page of ViaVoice Options to specify whether 
  322.    you want the Euro symbol or the currency abbreviation EUR to be 
  323.    displayed with the amount.  The default is the Euro symbol.
  324.  
  325.    Note: to be displayed in your dictation, the Euro character must 
  326.          be available in the font you use in your dictation window 
  327.          (SpeakPad, Word 97, or, if you are using Direct Dictation, 
  328.          the window of the target application).  You can obtain the
  329.          Euro character for several fonts from Microsoft Corporation's 
  330.          web site.  Should the Euro character not be available to 
  331.          your dictation window, you will see some other character
  332.          instead of the Euro symbol.

  335. K. Close virus-checking system protection before restoring a user
  336.  
  337.  o Most virus-checking software enable you to set up a  
  338.    "system shield" or system protection, where files
  339.    are checked for virus activity whenever they are accessed.
  340.  
  341.    When you plan to restore a user (from the User tab
  342.    on ViaVoice Options), first disable the system shield 
  343.    before restoring the User data.
